Hands on with Overwatch

A little delayed, but a couple weeks ago I had the great opportunity to be at PAX East. It was my very first PAX ever, and while I’ve been to New York Comic Con and Fan Expo, I was absolutely astonished by this convention. The highlight of my weekend was waiting in a line for 2 hrs to play OverwatchBlizzard’s latest IP. It’s not normal to be excited about waiting in a long line, but readers of my last post on Overwatch know how much I’ve been looking forward to playing this game. Everything from the Pixar style artwork to the Team Fortress 2 style battle mechanics, this game made me want to play it from the cinematic trailer which never happens, gameplay trailers for life after all. Oh … but we got one of those too…

Now, I know what you’re saying, you can’t possibly know that it’s fun from a trailer, and you’re right, but I got to play four glorious heart pounding rounds of that game at PAX. My friends, it is fun. Its super fun. I played as Bastion and Zenyatta, the two robot characters, and they couldn’t have been more different, but they’re play styles felt individualistically important to the battle being fought. That’s not to say that the entire game was balanced. Heavens know that Reaper is a kill stealing jerk that needs to be hit with a nerf bat, but it still was fun, and that’s enough for me to at least play it once it releases. Some of the heroes are very similar to other video game characters you know and love. McCree, who is the recently announced gunslinger hero, is a weird cross between Graves from League of Legends and John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. Not to mention that the entire game type is a TF2 ripoff, but as they say, good artists copy, great artists steal. Just as I said before, this is a game to Overwatch and will be hitting the battle net sometime in 2016.
